The 2BCT Deployment Ceremony was blessed with near perfect North country Weather. The ceremony is conducted so the units who are deploying can “case” their colors (unit flags) and then they “uncase” the colors when they arrive in-country. It marks the official start of a deployment. It was heartwarming to see the huge crowd of [...]

Happy Birthday to Favorite Man! It was actually last Wednesday but we’ve been celebrating it all week. We didn’t have time to bake a cake on Wednesday (that was run to the ER night) so he got his cake on Friday, we went out for a birhtday lunch on Saturday and since I had to [...]
Smuggled Lava?
Posted in Travels on Sunday, 13 September, 2009 | 2 Comments »
A Big Island legend is if you take lava off the island, you’ll have bad luck until you return it. There used to be a display at the Volcanoes National Park Center where the letters and the returned lava were displayed on a board. These people wrote letters begging the park rangers to return the lava so [...]

For me, Labor Day has always been a fun day off ~ the last long weekend before school starts. But this year, I’ve been reflecting a little more on this Labor Day and how thankful I am to have a great job in this crazy economy.
It isn’t easy keeping up with a “career” as I [...]

We’re back in New York. As much as I love to travel, it always feels so good to be back in my own home. And one day, that home will be on the beach!

I took Favorite Man and Favorite Girl on a Paniolo Ride yesterday. And am I ever sore today. It’s been many, many years since I trotted on a horse but it was the canter that did me in. Ouch. Other than the pain involved, it was WONDERFUL. We went on the Sunset Ride and got [...]
More Time at the Volcano

The Volcano is erupting so we decided to take a helicopter tour which flies directly over the caldera and follows the lava flow to the ocean. Other than the motion sick woman on our flight, it was wonderful! Favorite Girl and I got to seat in the front seat with the pilot. FG’s reaction upon lift off:
The steaming [...]

The Big Island of Hawaii is BIG! That’s what I love about it ~ it’s so diverse. We began our visit in the Hawaii Volcanoes National Park. It’s located on the Southeast side of the island which wet and chilly. We’re staying at the Kilauea Military Camp (KMC) which rents out cottages to military members and [...]
